Privacy Policy
last updated 04/09/05 | version 1.0
This Privacy Policy only applies to the Christoffersen Law Firm web site. It does not apply to other sites to which we link.
This Policy, Personal Information: This Privacy Policy explains our collection, use, and disclosure of your Personal Information. "Personal Information" is information that would allow a party to contact you, including, for example, your full name, address, telephone number or email address. It also includes information that you share with us about your financial, business, and personal life.
Attorney-Client Privilege:The most important thing for you to understand is that any and all Personal Information that you share with us is protected by the attorney-client privilege and can only be used by us during the course of representing or advising you on legal matters. It may not be shared with others without your consent.
That said, the attorney-client privilege is not an absolute privilege. We may become legally obligated to disclose your Personal Information to the government or third parties under certain circumstances. For example, another party might subpoena your records, or we may be required to file forms with the County Clerk - and those forms would almost certainly include Personal Information such as your name, address, and phone number, and would likely become part of the public record.
Security, and Disclosure of Personal Information: Although we may disclose aggregated information about the use of our site, that information does not contain Personal Information. Except as noted in the preceeding paragraph, we will not disclose Personal Information to third parties. If the Christoffersen Law Firm becomes part of another organization, that organization will possess the Personal Information collected by the Christoffersen Law Firm, and it will assume the rights and obligations regarding your Personal Information as described in this Privacy Policy.
You should understand that email and some telecommunications devices - such as cellular phones - are not secure. However unlikely it may seem, it is nonetheless possible for third parties to unlawfully intercept or access private phone conversations and email correspondence. Along the same lines, it is possible for third parties to unlawfully, and without your knowledge or ours, use the internet to install keylogging software on your computer. You would be well advised to use antivirus and adware software, and a firewall, on your computer.
The Christoffersen Law Firm has implemented and follows industry standard measures to protect against unauthorized access to and unlawful interception or processing of Personal Information; however, there are always security risks - especially in the current technology environment.
Cookies, and Information Collected as You Browse this Web Site: We do not use cookies. Our web site is hosted by a third party service provider, who collects information indirectly and automatically (through, for example, the use of your "IP address") about your activities while visiting the site, including the web pages you view and the times you view them and information about the browser you are using. This information is not linked to or correlated with the Personal Information you submit to us; we use this browsing information for internal purposes such as to help understand how the site is being used and how it can be improved. An IP address is a number that is automatically assigned to your computer when you use the Internet. In some cases your IP address stays the same from browser session to browser session; but if you use a consumer internet access provider, your IP address probably varies from session to session.
Mobile Code: We use a limited amount of mobile code on this site (sometimes referred to as "active content"). Specifically, we run simple JavaScript routines to do things that make the site more useful to you. No information is collected and no cookies are sent to your computer. Here is what our code does:
- When you print a page from our site, our code adds the URL of the page you are printing. This makes it easy for you, or for someone else to whom you provide the print, to clearly see where to go on the web site to find the latest version of the printed page.
- When we update a page, our code automatically updates the "last updated" notice at the bottom of that page. This enables you to see when the page was updated.
- We provide a "back" button on some pages. The code that this button invokes is very similar to the code that runs your browser's "back" button.
- Our online forms - which are designed to help you organize the information that you will need in order to address certain legal situations - have a few simple, built-in capabilities. All forms have at least one "clear form" button to delete all of your data from a form once you have printed it. (Our forms are designed to be completed on-screen and then printed rather than submitted electronically. We do this for your security.) In addition, the text fields are set up so that when you click on them, any text already there is highlighted. This makes it much easier to overwrite and make changes.
If you are concerned about security and privacy, you may want to block/disable mobile code in your browser [http://www.cert.org/tech_tips/home_networks.html#IV-A-9]. Outside of the features described above - which are nice to have, but not essential - this site will run just fine with mobile code blocked.
Changes to this Policy: If we find that we need to change this Privacy Policy, we will post those changes here on this page.
